CROW Instructions
Here are some instructions for wearing a Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker (CROW) boot:
1. Prepare your foot.
Wear a long, wrinkle-free cotton sock that goes higher than the top of the boot. This helps protect your skin and reduce friction.
2. Put on the boot
Separate the front and back pieces of the boot.
Put your foot in the back section and slide your heel to the back.
Put on the front section, making sure the plastic overlaps the back.
Fasten the straps, starting with the ankle strap and then the rest. Make sure the straps are tight and there's equal tension on both sides.
3. Check your skin
Check your skin for sores every few hours, especially if you have limited feeling in your foot. Use a mirror to see the bottom of your foot and the back of your leg. Report any red marks that don't fade after 30 minutes. Contact our office immediately if you notice any new skin irritation.
4. Clean the boot.
Clean the boot daily with rubbing alcohol to remove body oils and residue. Make sure it's dry before putting it back on.
5. Don't drive
Don't drive with the CROW boot on your foot. You can remove the boot and put on a comfortable shoe when you're in the car.
6. Don't put weight on your foot without the boot
Doing so could lead to further injury.
7. Follow up with your Podiatrist or Orthopedic surgeon as advised.
